Chelsea is crude and distasteful but also hilarious. If that sounds good to you then you'll probably love this collection of stories about Chelsea's many one night stands. While there were a few moments that I thought wow I can't believe she just wrote that, they also tended to be the moments I was laughing the hardest. If you like your humour to be pushing the boundaries you'll find this hilarious, if not then don't bother reading this book, you'll probably just think the rest of us are a little bit twisted.
This is a good book about homeless children in Brazil. You get a glimpse into their life. You see how they are victimized but at the same the author doesn't leave out how they victimize others. There is an "us versus them" mentality, between children and adults, between rich and poor, between authority figures and the rest of the population. The way the African culture mixes into Latin American is very well exemplified in this book also.
Read this book twice: once for pleasure and once to pay attention to the religious evolution. It's a fine example of how a faith/cult can come about, and the book has some tasty bits of philosophy in it, borrowed and adapted from current world faiths, and melded in a way that works beautifully. Can you tell I'm a sucker for this book? I adore the series.
Read in 1999 for a book club. This is about infidelity in marraige. I just remember that one of the ladies in the book group was totally upset to think that this could ever happen. She had never before considered the possibility of a cheating husband. She was sweet, but so naive!
This is an interesting concept for a book, and while at times it can be claustrophobic, Patchett does a good job at making a potentially boring situation, breathtaking. Quiet and descriptive, the reader truly begins to care about the characters, which makes the abrupt ending all the more disappointing.
This is one of these books which you either like or not. I don't like it. The story is chewy and the humor promised in the blurb didn't work for me.
I'm really enjoying Ms. Sloan's books. Just like Guilt by Association, there was quite a twist at the end. After reading her debut, I knew what to expect, and knew who the perp was in the opening chapters. I have a horrible habit of looking ahead once I've made my guess at the outcome. I almost put the book down after reading that I was correct, but I'm so glad that I didn't. The storyline carries you quickly to the end. Set aside a nice chunk of time to read this in as few sittings as possible. You'll likely find yourself unable to put it down.
This took me WAY too long to read. What is commonly referred to as "Little Women" today was originally written by Alcott as two separate books, the first half being "Little Women" followed up by "Good Wives." I would give the first half of the book (or the original novel) three stars and the second half (Good Wives) 4 stars. I think that is because I have read too many "woe is me" winey teenage girl novels lately and I was over it. Once I hit the second half of the novel (which took a while getting there since I read three different book simultaneously trying to avoid finishing this one) I couldn't put it down, and regretted it taking me so long. I always related to Jo, but it was different to read her through "married with kids" eyes rather than "woe is me teenager" eyes. And, once again, the novel is so much better than the movie I grew up watching (the one with Katharine Hepburn NOT Winona Ryder, thank you very much). I always felt sad and a bit mift about the ending, but thoroughly enjoyed it this go around. I guess I'm growing up, just like Jo ;)
